What is CranioSacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system. This system is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. CST is based on the premise that minor imbalances in this system could cause sensory, motor, or neurological disabilities. Through soft touches, practitioners seek to listen to the rhythms of the craniosacral system, identifying areas of restriction or imbalance. The technique is often used as a preventive health measure due to its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.

The approach was developed by Dr. John Upledger in the 1970s and is practiced worldwide. During a session, clients lie fully clothed on a treatment table while the therapist uses a light touch to assess the craniosacral rhythm. The therapist then uses delicate manual techniques to release those problem areas and relieve undue pressure on the brain and spinal cord.
Advocates of CST claim that it has been effective in treating a variety of conditions, including:
-
Headaches
-
Neck and back pain
-
TMJ Syndrome
-
Chronic fatigue
-
Stress-related disorders
